The mayor of Anchorage, Alaska is resigning after a tawdry scandal involving accusations of him sending nude videos were first reported by a local news anchor. But there's way more to his resignation that needs to be unpacked.
It all started last Friday (10/9) when Anchorage ABC/Fox affiliate news anchor Maria Athens posted the following video on her Facebook page claiming she had a video of the mayor naked that was posted on an underage girl's website.
That night, no such story ran on the news. The mayor denied the existence of the video and the station's manager even went so far as to disavow the story. So Athens took to Facebook and posted what she claims were screen shots of the mayor naked.
If it seems kind of scummy for a news anchor to use the hashtag "#takethathaters" and talk about the mayor's wife in the post, you'd be onto something, because this is where Athen's story begins to unravel. On Monday, a recording of a voicemail was released that Athens sent to the Mayor on the day of she made the allegations. Buckle up for this one, NSFW language abounds.
As it turns out, the shots she posted on her social media were either from a video she had or had been sent to her by the mayor, because yesterday, the mayor admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with Athens years ago and said he is resigning from office. Here's an adorable photo of the couple from happier times.
As if that wasn't enough, Athens was arrested on Friday in the TV station's parking lot after trying to force her way into the building and assaulting her boyfriend (who also happened to be the station manager from earlier who disavowed the allegations she made against the mayor).
No word if she has a lawyer yet, but she hasn't taken down her Facebook page so soak it in while you still can...
